Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a legislative agreement with the United States Senate reauthorizing Federal Aviation Administration programs and makes reforms to federal disaster assistance programs. Included in this legislation are two provisions sponsored by U.S. Rep. Mike Bost (IL-12) focused on buying American and inspiring careers in aviation for the youth by giving them the resources they need.

U.S. Representative Mike Bost testified today before a hearing of the House Financial Services Housing Subcommittee concerning the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s failed oversight of the Alexander County Housing Authority. Bost approached subcommittee chairman Sean Duffy (R-WI) for the hearing to shed light on the housing crisis in Cairo and prompt Congress to strengthen federal oversight.

U.S. Representative Mike Bost today announced the Economic Development Administration (EDA) has awarded a $3.75 million grant to the Southern Illinois Airport Authority for construction of two new hangar buildings in Carbondale. The investments are expected to create 45 new jobs and facilitate the expansion of several private aviation companies, the aviation cluster, and workforce training at Southern Illinois University’s Transportation Education Center.

U.S. Representative Mike Bost today signed a resolution reaffirming his support for protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions. H.Res. 1066 expresses that protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions should be retained in law, regardless of any future changes to the Affordable Care Act or any court rulings that could impact access to coverage.

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation that strengthens infrastructure at America’s ports, locks, dams and waterways. Included in the Water Resources Development Act was a provision introduced by U.S. Rep. Mike Bost (IL-12) to help rebuild Alexander County’s Len Small Levee, which was breached during the holiday floods of 2016. The final package is expected to be passed by the U.S. Senate and signed into law by the president in the coming weeks.

U.S. Representative Mike Bost today announced a National Science Foundation (NSF) funding award of $180,000 and a Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) award of $244,850 to SIU Carbondale. The NSF grant will support a project related to quantum computing, while the HHS grant will be used to further research into the development and function of Sertoli cells.

The tour follows the announcement last month that the port would receive a $2.27 million Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant for construction of a new rail line. The rail construction will enhance the link between area manufacturers and the nation’s freight transportation network and boost the region’s economic readiness and competitiveness.

The House of Representatives today passed bipartisan legislation sponsored by U.S. Representative Mike Bost (IL-12) that would reform hiring for Human Resources positions at Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities by a vote of 417-0. The VA Hospitals Establishing Leadership Performance (HELP) Act (H.R. 5864) instructs the VA to establish qualifications for each HR position within the VHA and establish standardized performance metrics similar to the private sector. HR departments at the VA currently have no such requirements. The legislation now heads to the Senate for further consideration.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced it will take several actions to assist farmers while the administration challenges unfair foreign trade practices. USDA will authorize up to $12 billion in programs, which is in line with the estimated $11 billion impact of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods. These programs will assist agricultural producers to meet the costs of disrupted markets.
