WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Mike Bost (R-IL) today introduced the bipartisan World War II Pacific War Heroes Congressional Gold Medal Act to award Congress’ highest civilian honor to American prisoners of war who fought Imperial Japan in the Pacific Theater of World War II.

“America’s Greatest Generation was comprised of ordinary men and women who were challenged by their times to do extraordinary things,” said Bost. “Many of these brave Americans risked their lives and were captured in the Pacific Theater fighting against Japan’s Imperial Army. Unfortunately, the memories of the sacrifices made by past generations of POWs too often fade with time. I’m proud to introduce this legislation to honor the over 27,000 Americans held as prisoners of war and the 11,000 who died in Japanese POW camps. It’s been a long time coming, but this is the recognition they deserve.”

The Congressional Gold Medal is awarded to individuals and groups to recognize their contributions to the United States.
