Rep. Bost Votes to Freeze Pay for Members of Congress

Washington, D.C. — Congressman Mike Bost (IL-12) voted today to freeze his own salary and the salaries of other members of Congress for the next fiscal year.  The pay freeze passed the House as part of the FY2016 Legislative Branch Appropriations bill.

“Members of Congress should be no different than any hardworking family in Southern Illinois when it comes to being accountable with our money,” said Rep. Bost.  “While many of these families are still trying to make ends meet, the last thing we need is a pay raise for Members of Congress.”

“Southern Illinoisans sent me to Washington to cut wasteful spending and to hold our government more accountable,” added Bost.  “We need to show the American people that we’re serious about stopping out-of-control spending by leading with our actions and not just more political rhetoric.”

                                                        The FY2016 Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill also cuts spending by:

  • Freezing funding for the Legislative Branch for the third year in a row at a savings of $3.3 billion;

  • Continuing a 14 percent reduction in House of Representatives office budgets, and

  • Trimming funding for other governmental programs at a savings of $9.8 million.
