Washington, D.C. — Today, Rep. Mike Bost (IL-12) applauded Union Pacific Railroad’s investment of more than $20 million in the rail line between Chester and the Illinois/Missouri border.  The privately-funded project will be completed by mid-October.

“Union Pacific’s investment of millions of dollars in this important railway project shows the commitment the company has to meeting the transportation needs of Southern Illinois,” said Rep. Bost.  “Not only will this project spur economic growth in the region, it will help enhance safety, reduce motorist wait times at crossings and improve railway operating efficiency.  Just as importantly, it accomplishes these goals without using any taxpayer money.”

“Union Pacific helps businesses connect with consumers, suppliers and markets across the nation and around the world,” said Donna Kush, Union Pacific Vice President of Public Affairs.  “In addition to helping move our customers’ goods safely and efficiently, our investments support communities by reducing traffic congestion, facilitating industrial development and promoting economic expansion.”

Union Pacific’s Investment in Southern Illinois Transportation Includes:

  • Replacing 71,800 railroad ties;

  • Replacing nearly 15 miles of rail;

  • Installing 30,000 tons of rock ballast; and

  • Repairing the surfaces at 43 road crossings.
